Many, if not all, over the counter cosmetic serums and moisturisers are only permitted to treat the outer layer of skin, the epidermis, and are restricted from working within the second layer, the dermis. However, what happens in the dermis impacts the appearance of the epidermis (outer layer). By not reaching the dermis (second layer), the creams are unable to reverse the signs of ageing or repair any damage. Therefore, it is necessary and more effective to penetrate the dermis and this can be done with microneedling, sometimes known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). Microneedling is able to treat the dermis by giving nourishment and encourage the production of new collagen and skin tissue for smoother, firmer, flawless skin and a more youthful look, leaving you feeling more confident about your skin.
What is microneedling?
Microneedling makes thousands of pinholes into the epidermis (outer layer of skin) that allows powerful nutrients to be absorbed by the dermis (second layer of skin). This procedure is performed with an approved device called a Dermapen which uses disposable needle cartridges and can easily manoeuvre around facial contours and delicate features like eyes, nose and mouth.
What is microneedling suitable for?
The pen is gently pressed into the skin making microscopic pin points allowing the powerful serum of nutrients to enter the dermis, (second layer of skin) encouraging the breakdown of undesired sunspots, freckles and acne scars, thus promoting collagen production and skin healing and rid the skin of fine lines and wrinkles.
Is microneedling safe?
Microneedling practiced by a trained professional as at Face Radiance, adhering to the safety standards and best practices, is very safe. It is the most effective, non invasive skin treatment with minimal discomfort, healing time and risks.
Laser therapy or microneedling treatment?
Firstly, you should never economise when it comes to treatments for your face or body. However, when considering any treatment, it is important to understand where your money is going. Plastic surgeons, dermatologists, or similar service providers, will charge excessive amounts per session in comparison to microneedling. The main cost difference comes down to expensive laser machines and equipment that require annual maintenance contracts with the cost being passed onto the client.
Lasers are very powerful devices and improper use by insufficiently trained personnel increases the risk of burns, scarring, permanent skin pigmentation and eye damage. These risks are owing to the very nature of what lasers do - they introduce heat and burn. Burning the skin is the exact opposite of what we want to do when reversing the signs of ageing and promoting skin rejuvenation.
What are the risks of home microneedling kits?
Microneedling should be carried out by someone who has been trained and is routinely involved in the practice and monitoring of skin undergoing this treatment. Additionally, attempting to use devices such as derma rollers at home isn't safe as the depth of needles cannot be controlled and this increases the risk of injury and bacterial infection with undesirable results. Face Radiance are fully trained and qualified microneedling experts and will guide you through the process to achieve your desired look.
What about a skin peel?
The beauty industry used to hold the position that the outer layer of skin (epidermis) is simply dead cells. This mindset has since changed and it is now believed the epidermis is a complex layer of skin where chemical processes still take place and we should be interested in protecting the skin cells that we have. Therefore, it is not supported that the skin be peeled in order to produce younger, stronger skin. It is the skin's thickness that prevents ageing and we should be looking after the skin we have.
